Types of Driers:

Primary driers:

Act as oxidation catalysts, as their metal soaps exhibit more than one oxidation state. Primary driers catalyse cross linking of the resin and in the process hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxylic groups are formed

Through driers:

Ensure that a coating dries at a uniform rate throughout the body of the film. Primary driers without the presence of through driers would mainly dry the surface of the film, whilst the coating underneath would remain wet. Through driers are used to ensure that the coating dries at a uniform rate throughout the body of the film not just at the surface. Through driers link fatty acid chains via oxygen-metal-oxygen bridges leading to cross-links.

Auxiliary driers:

Modify the effect of other driers but do not demonstrate any drying action on their own.

    It is most commonly used most active

    Strongly promotes surface drying. It is Bluish Violet in colour, but low effect on color on the dry paint film.

    It produces less discoloration in wet paint and upon ageing of dried paint.

    Used in combination with other metal driers. It has tendency of poor dry through and cause surface wrinkling

    It Promotes polymerization, increased hardness, trough

    drying.

    Activity as sole drier is very low and hence always used with Cobalt & /or Manganese, Calcium.

    Lead improves

    flexibility and durability of the film.

    It has sulphur staining tendency and also reacts with polybasic acids.

    Ecotoxic in nature and hence should not be used in toys and edible product packaging films.

    It is auxillary drier and has low drying action but is important in combination with active drier. Stabilizes active driers and is often used to replace Lead . Promotes drying under adverse

    weather conditions. Reduces loss of dry issues. It promotes  pigment wetting and dispersing and improves hardness, gloss and reduces the silkins.

    Zinc is auxiliary drier. It activates cobalt thus may enable reduced Cobalt  levels for similar drying performance and thus lower risk of film discoloration. Zinc drier keep the film of the paint open  by retarding the surface drying thus promotes the through drying and avoids surface wrinkling.

    Zinc addition maintains the colour and gloss of the film.

    Most widely accepted replacements for lead. It is an efficient auxillary drier. It serves as through drier in combination with Cobalt, Manganese and Calcium. Shows best

    color, lowest yellowing tendency. Zirconium is poor pgment wetting and dispersion. It is best cross-linking agent and imparts hardness,, adhesion of stoved films.

    It is most suitable in formulation of ship bottom paints as it acts as anti fouling agent. It hydrolyses in presence of sea water forming copper Hydroxide and Octoic acid where copper Hydroxide is an active toxicant.

    It prevents dry rot  and mildew growth in timber and also used as rot proofing agent in textiles. It is also effective in protection against termites, beets and ambrosia and other insect attacking timber and lumber. The recommended to use 2-2.5% as metal

    Barium Octoate can be used as Substitute for lead Octoate. It  improves throughdrying in combination with Cobalt, imparts good pigment wetting characteristics. It improves gloss and reduces loss of dry. Barium can have a negative impact on drying when used with cobalt alternatives.

    Ambani Organics Limited,  offer a variety of  customised drier combinations pre mixes which offers advantages over single metal driers These combinations are technically  pre-stabilised and eliminates the problems of gelling arising from  the acid/base nature of different driers. Our production controls assures the metal ratios avoiding  any performance variations related  with variations  in metal concentrations or ratios.
